Much of the decisions about Aston Solar Torch, functionality and design, are inherited from a related series of solar lanterns, that I have already designed for Sirius.
Therefore, it is also given that the flame is embedded in wax. And to make the candle more visible and the flame more diffuse, the wave pattern of the glass, starts just above the candle.
The inspiration for the glass pattern comes from old ship lanterns, which often have a wavy surface to refracts light.
I use this effect to distort the light, when looking into the flame, so that one does not actually notice, that the flame is artificial. And then it also gives a nice and decorative effect.
It is also important to have a large surface for the solar cell, so that is one of the reasons, why I have chosen the cone shape for the torch.
